Frequently asked questions
What is a stock haircut?
A haircut is the percentage discount NSE clearing applies when you pledge a security as collateral. If a stock has a 12.5% haircut, only 87.5% of its close price counts as margin. Arrow shows that discount, the usable collateral value per share, and whether the security is pledgeable.
How is collateral value calculated?
Collateral value per share is close price × (100 − haircut %) / 100. Haircut % is the applicable margin from the latest VAR file — typically VAR plus extreme-loss margin (ELM), plus any ad-hoc margin the exchange has added.
What are VAR and ELM?
Value-at-Risk (VAR) is the statistical loss NSE expects on the security. Extreme Loss Margin (ELM) is an extra buffer for tail moves. Together with any ad-hoc margin they become the applicable margin, which is the haircut used for pledging.
Which securities can be pledged as margin?
Only exchange-approved securities with a haircut below 100% are pledgeable. Filter the table to pledgeable names, or open a symbol page to see the approved-securities flag, series and ISIN.
How often are haircuts updated?
Arrow reads VAR, approved-securities and mutual-fund haircut files from NSE archives when this site is built. The as-of date on this page is the business date of that snapshot.
